All too often, communities of color in New York City are excluded from meaningful education reform, leaving our children without the support and opportunities they deserve. The New York Urban League is strengthening its policy and advocacy work by serving as a vital convener of local educators, families, community leaders, and advocacy organizations to advance equitable education policy across the five boroughs. Our current efforts include pushing for improvements to New York State’s assessment and accountability systems so they more accurately reflect the lived experiences and needs of Black and Brown students in NYC. By expanding grassroots advocacy and equipping neighborhood leaders with the tools to drive change, we aim to elevate the citywide dialogue on educational equity—addressing critical issues such as accountability, college and career readiness, and access to high-quality early childhood education. In collaboration with our civil rights partners and community stakeholders, we remain committed to ensuring that the voices of those most affected by education policy in New York City are centered, heard, and prioritized.
