Director of Programs

Status: Full-time, Exempt | Hybrid/Travel

The Role

The Director of Programs is a key leadership position responsible for managing all Career and Entrepreneurial Programs, Education and Nonprofit Stabilization Fund portfolios for NYUL. Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, this role drives the development and expansion of critical programs, manages day-to-day operations, and is responsible for staff supervision, partner engagement, and program financial management. The Director ensures all programs operate at a high level of performance and accountability.


Key Responsibilities

  • Program Operations: Manage day-to-day operations of the programs within the Employment and Education Services portfolio.

  • Program Development & Expansion: Monitor the development and expansion of programs, including but not limited to: Career and Entrepreneurial Programs, Compass High, Project Ready, Nonprofit Stabilization Program, and Education initiatives.

  • Staff Leadership & Supervision: Hire, supervise, develop, and manage staff and interns to ensure all programs meet goals, objectives, and milestones.

  • Innovation & Strategy: Provide innovative program development and operational ideas and solutions for current and future contracts/grants.

  • Partnership Management: Develop effective working relationships with employers, community partners, and schools, maintaining regular contact to monitor satisfaction and assess staffing needs.

  • Outcomes & Reporting: Track employment placement and retention outcomes; accurately document all services; identify, develop, and maintain client data; submit monthly and annual impact reports.

  • Budget & Funding: Work with program budgets and provide support in securing additional funding to sustain and expand the program portfolio.

  • Compliance & Accountability: Ensure confidentiality in all areas of responsibility and maintain very high standards for performance and accountability.

  • Agency Initiatives: Support program and agency-wide initiatives and participate in professional development.

What We're Looking For

  • Education & Experience: Master’s degree in social work, education, counseling or related field with at least four years of supervisory experience, OR Bachelor’s degree with three to five years of experience in nonprofit, education, workforce or related field with at least three years of supervisory experience.

  • Leadership & Management: Excellent leadership, time management, and emotional intelligence, with the proven ability to build, motivate, and coach effective leaders and teams.

  • Project Management: Strong project management skills with the ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and effectively manage partnerships and resources.

  • Diversity & Inclusion: Experience building trusting relationships with people from diverse socio-economic, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds; perspective on issues of diversity and inclusion.

  • Skills: Strong analytical and communication skills (written and verbal) and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology.

  • Characteristics: Demonstrated track record of effective problem-solving and decision-making; a relentless pursuit of results.

  • Travel: Ability to work outdoors and travel throughout NYC.
