Bethune Fellowship Project

Teachers, Educational Advocates and the Civil Rights Community address matters
impacting the performance of children attending New York City schools

About the Bethune Fellowship Project

Led by the New York Urban League the Bethune Fellowship seeks the engagement of teachers, educational advocates and the civil rights community to address matters impacting the performance of children attending New York City schools. This fellowship unites these three constituencies that rarely partner to address the state of education. Educators4Excellence and Teaching Matters will co-facilitate this innovative urban education project with the New York Urban League serving as the lead. Fellows will have the opportunity to explore, propose and test hypotheses on recommendations that will be used to inform policy makers, funders and schools systems about the potential opportunities to improve the performance of NYC students. The fellowship forges relationships between teacher practice and teacher advocacy (voice) and equity communities to promote greater impact in education reform. The primary learning question will be to explore how could greater knowledge by teacher practice, advocacy and civil rights groups of each other’s work and trends lead to greater advocacy and impact around the Common Core Standards, Teaching Effectiveness and Personalized Learning while being inclusive of the diversity represented in New York’s school.
