New York Urban League to Launch Afterschool Stem Boot Camp sponsored by Infor:

New York, New York–NYUL and Infor launch STEM boot camp afterschool program for 11th & 12th graders

This fall, the New York Urban League, in partnership with Infor, will launch the STEM Boot camp afterschool program for high school juniors and seniors. This 30-week afterschool program will provide students an opportunity to learn how to design, build, and develop apps using Infor’s Mongoose application development framework. Students will meet afterschool twice a week to engage in conversation about how technology aids in the development of applications for different areas of business and how it can be used to develop entrepreneurial opportunities or unlock potential within a corporation.

Tiana McFarlane, Director of Education & Technology, stated that “NYUL is very excited to continue this partnership with Infor to provide enriching STEM programs to underserved young men and women. Our partnership began with our 12-week Saturday STEM boot camp last year, which culminated in 12 students learning the Infor Mongoose platform, designing a web portal for their business idea, and presenting in group to executives at Infor. One of our 12th grade participants; Amal Mittal, garnered an internship to review and develop instructional tools for high school students to learn Infor’s Mongoose application development framework”.

Students will also have an opportunity to participate in conversations and job shadowing with Infor Mongoose team members two days per week each month to fortify their knowledge of Mongoose and get a firsthand look at real world applications of Mongoose. The program will conclude with a presentation of the student’s team project developed over the course of the program – using knowledge gained through interaction with Mongoose and Infor team members. The top students will also have access to summer internship opportunities with Infor.

“Offering immersive job shadowing and skill-building experiences for young people in underserved communities offers them greater opportunities in the future to access STEM-related internships and sustained employment in these industries.” said Arva Rice President and CEO of New York Urban League.
