Committee chairpersons

The NYULYP is run by an 9-person board consisting of 4 Executive Board members and 5 Committee Chairpersons . The Executive Board is responsible for overseeing the programs and activities of the NYULYP and leading our members towards achieving goals that support our mission.

Rahshib Thomas, Community Service Chair

Rashib is a Human Resources Manager for Grand Hospitality located in downtown Manhattan. His company is known for its luxury boutique hotels, Soho and Tribeca Grand. Raised in Greater New Orleans, Rahshib came to New York to accept a position with Le Parker Meridien, The Jack Parker Corporation. Rahshib has been a member of the New York Urban League Young Professionals (NYULYP) since 2006 and served as the 2006-2007 Community Service Committee Chair.   Prior to joining the NYULYP, he was a member of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans serving on its annual Equal Opportunity Day Steering Committee. His commitment to community service has allowed him to fundraise for the benefit of senior citizens as well as motivationally speak to public school students.

He also serves on St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's local Minority Professionals Group Steering Committee. He earned a BA from the University of Louisiana Monroe where he majored in Mass Communications. He enjoys being a member of World Changers Church New York.

Karla A. Hall, Fundraising and Finance Chair Passionate, motivated and professional, Karla A. Hall balances a challenging career in risk management with leadership roles in volunteer organizations.

Currently, Karla manages the Operational Risk reporting process for the Institutional Securities Division at Morgan Stanley, including development of Senior Management reporting and continued improvement in efficiencies within the process. Previously at Merrill Lynch, Karla managed day-to-day operations of Alternative Investments in the Global Markets and Investment Banking division, and then moved onto Regulatory Reporting, where she coordinated Daily Net Capital Allocations with the SEC and Federal Reserve Bank. Her background also includes SOX Compliance. In Spring 2006, she received an M.B.A. in International Business from the Rome, Italy campus of St. John’s University to complement her B.S. in Finance.

Dedicated to effective action, Karla holds key leadership positions in volunteer organizations. She is an active member of the New York Urban League Young Professionals and chairperson of its Fundraising and Finance committee. She also serves as First Vice President of Pi Kappa Omega chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, managing the planning and execution of an annual Program Calendar for the chapter. She sits on the Volunteer Education Conference committee, a premier fundraiser for the New York Junior League, a non-profit organization committed to developing the potential of women and improving communities. She was appointed to the International Investment Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a committee charged with originating and administering a program of investment policies throughout the organization and providing strategic recommendations to the organization.

Kameelah Dixon, Membership Chair In September 2007 Kameelah will assume the position of Lead Teacher at the Performing Arts and Technology High School in Brooklyn, New York. As a Lead Teacher, Kameelah will function in a supervisory capacity and as a staff developer assisting the principal with leading the math department.

As an educator, Kameelah began her career in 2002 at the Cicely Tyson School for Performing Arts in East Orange, NJ. In the fall of 2002 Kameelah joined the staff of Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHS) in Brooklyn. During her tenure at TJHS Kameelah was selected to teach in the “Principal’s Academy” which consisted of the most at risk children in the population. Kameelah also lead staff development, served as a representative on the UFT consultation committee and attended the Summer Mathematics Leadership Institute for Administrators in which she was the only teacher present.

After leaving TJHS, Kameelah began working at the Urban Assembly School of Music & Art (UAMA). At UAMA she served as UFT Chapter Leader, step team advisor and advisory leader. Kameelah was soon recognized as a leader in the union and was selected by the District Representative of the UFT to join the Unity Committee. Membership in the Unity Committee can only be obtained through sponsorship.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Kameelah is the youngest of six children. Kameelah obtained a B.S. Computer Science in 1999 from Hampton University. Currently Kameelah is finishing work on her M.S. Urban Education: Math 7-12 at Long Island University – Brooklyn Campus.

Althea Kitchens, Communications Chair

Althea Kitchens is presently the Accounts Payable Manager for Mosaica Education, Inc. (MEI), a private educational management company that handles the financial and operational responsibilities of over 40 charters schools nationally and internationally.

Prior to being with MEI, Althea has exemplified a keen ability to create and maintain working relationships; impeccable organizational management; and proficient oral and written capabilities. Such skills have been proven in her past employment experiences of: coordinating & managing over 200 volunteers for the American Cancer Society’s Special Events; developing strong research presentations and achieving profitable sales for over 1,300 radio stations represented by Clear Channel Radio; and successfully establishing an internal newsletter for both staff and students of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to her work with the NYULYP, Althea is an active member of the New York Association of Broadcast Journalists, where she has previously assisted with their annual High School Journalism Workshop; she serves as a New York representative for her alma mater for local recruiting events; and she has played an integral role in establishing the only Young Adult chapter in the Empire State Federation (New York) for the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. In all, Althea has been committed to succeed in her personal achievements to in turn offer others the same opportunities.

Althea graduated cum laude from Cheyney University, the nation’s oldest African American institution for higher education. She earned a bachelors degree in Communications with a focus in Public Relations and Business Administration.
