Rebirth!

2008_rebirth200.jpgThe New York Urban League Young Professionals hosted Rebirth! 2008: "Homage to Black Cinema" in March, an evening of independent film, art, music and culture inspired by the young influential African Americans that gave birth to the Harlem Renaissance, as well as a celebration of this cultural revival that continues to appear in the New York City community today. This event is an annual fundraiser which celebrates the legacy of African-American culture. Rebirth! 2008 was a resounding success for members, sponsors, and supporters, drawing approximately 150 attendees—more than 100 of whom were young professionals—from across the New York Metro area.

rebirth06-2.jpgThe honorees of the evening were film directors Pete Chatmon & Randall Dottin and appealed to the five senses by offering a independent short film showcase featuring several emerging filmmakers (sight), musical mood provided by DJ Herbert H. Holler from the infamous Freedom Party (sound), an array of exquisite hors d'oeuvres and complimentary cocktails provided by Moet Hennessy (smell / taste), and an amazing setting that will encourage networking and mingling (touch).

rebirth06-3.jpgRebirth! 2008 was made possible with contributions by Moet Hennessy USA, Mercedes Benz, Vibe Magazine, and Helen Mills Studio in NYC. Proceeds from the event supported the charitable works & programs of The New York Urban League and the Young Professionals’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day for among youth in June 2008. The NYULYP will focus on increasing knowledge and awareness of this disease among teenagers and their families, fulfilling both the Education & Youth and the Health & Quality of Life aims on the National Urban League’s Five-Point Empowerment Agenda.
