NYUL Overview cont.

The NYUL - Serving the community since 1919

In Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens, residents facing evictions, the homeless and those living in substandard and inadequate housing, come to the League daily to seek assistance from trained housing counselors. Citywide, the League promotes home ownership for city residents of all economic strata, through borough-wide forums featuring financial credit counselors, realtors and mortgage experts.

The League also plays a vital role in helping older New Yorkers. In the Corona community of Queens, Services to Seniors provides critical services to homebound senior citizens.

In an effort to strengthen the health and well-being of families, the League coordinates child abuse and neglect prevention services including parenting skills training, intensive counseling and case management services in Manhattan and Brooklyn. In addition, in response to the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, the League provides the leadership for networks of service providers through the Ryan White HIV-Care Networks in Manhattan and Queens. The Community Health Program in Staten Island gives community residents easy access to health services located in their immediate communities.

Youth Service OrganizationsIn Manhattan, the Living Consortium, a network of youth service organizations, is housed and managed by the Urban League. On Staten Island, the Youth Program promotes positive inter-group relations by bringing young people of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds together to work on projects such as the development of a multi-cultural calendar and an island-wide Youth Summit.

The Bridge to Brotherhood Program promotes positive inter-group relations between young people of the city's myriad ethnic groups. The Jeter's Leaders Program, spearheaded by New York Yankee all-star shortstop, Derek Jeter, engages young people in activities that promote good health, recreation and sports with an emphasis on avoiding drug and alcohol use amongst themselves and their peers.

Today, as in the past, the League remains an outspoken advocate for African-Americans, the poor and the working poor. On behalf of its constituents, the League addresses the concerns of city residents and plays a unique and vital role in the life of New York City, for the betterment of us all.

The New York Urban League is funded by a grant from the United Way of New York City and through various city, state and federal contracts. In addition, the League receives, welcomes, and encourages charitable support from individuals, corporations and foundations. The League also benefits from support from Borough Presidents' discretionary funds.

When you become a member of, or donate to the New York Urban League, you become a partner and investor in our efforts to improve the social and economic conditions for all residents of New York City. Your support provides the resources to bring about significant and lasting change.
