NYUL's Mission & Goals

The NYUL - Serving the community since 1919

We fulfill this mission by providing programs and initiatives primarily in the areas of employment and education.

The NYUL has a rich history and long legacy of service to New Yorkers. The NYUL was founded in 1919 by an inter-racial group of concerned New Yorkers in response to the difficulties faced by African Americans migrating from the agricultural and rural south, to the industrial, urban centers of the north. Since that time the League has actualized its mission through strategic partnerships with other community-based organizations, citywide and neighborhood-based service providers, the public sector and the city's business and corporate communities.

Our vision over the next five years is to:

  • Be the pre-eminent organization in New York City that will work in all of the communities of New York and with key-decision-makers to create a city where African Americans and others are able to take advantage of its opportunities, are gainfully employed, well-educated and live in harmony.
  • To be fully staffed by a highly skilled staff that is aware of and responsive to the population it serves.
  • To have programs that are effective and of high quality and its activities will emanate from a facility that is modern and technically advanced.
  • To be recognized for and respected because of its services, research, advocacy and public policy positions on behalf of African Americans and other who need to have their voices heard.
